more hikaru/akira thoughts: so they’re eternal rivals, yeah? well, i was rereading the offiical shonen jump translation i noticed at this bit they wrote “lifelong rival” rather than “eternal rival” and i don’t love it like i love “eternal rival” but wow a whole new vein of feelings. just. eternal has this whole implication of never-ending but lifelong puts me on this train of thought of these kids being really ancient and living together and playing go on their porch and things often degenerating into ridiculous squabbles over the goban and still learning things from each other even after decades and decades together because that’s how they operate and why they’re eternal rivals because they have always and will always help each other grow.
